LG Electronics will showcase a new 8K TV with Alpha 9 3rd Generation (9 Gen3), an artificial intelligence processor that has become more powerful at CES 2020, the world's largest consumer electronics and IT exhibition in Las Vegas.
LG Electronics will significantly expand its 'Real 8K' TV lineup in 2020. The LG Signature All-Red 8K lineup adds 77 to the existing 88 type and the LG Nano Cell 8K increases the existing 75 type to 65 type.
LG Electronics' Real 8K TV has a horizontal and vertical image quality brightness (Contrast Modulation, CM) value of 90%, respectively, and realizes vivid 8K resolution in either direction of up and down. The CTA (CTA) of the Consumer Technology Association of the United States also meets all the 8K UHD certification standards and applies the certification logo.
In 2019, CTA specified the number of pixels with more than 33 million and the image quality brightness of at least 50% as a screen resolution requirement among the 8K UHD certification standards. In particular, LG Electronics' Real 8K TV offers a clearness of 90%, which is well above the 50% standard value of image quality. In addition, it included digital signal input and upscaling.
Intertek, a global testing and certification body, said that the image quality clarity of the 75-inch LG nanocell 8K was measured 90% and 91% in horizontal and vertical directions, respectively.
According to the test results of TUV Rheinland, Europe's most prestigious certification body, the picture quality description value of the 77-inch LG Signature All-Red 8K was 94.7% horizontal and 93.7% vertical.
LG Electronics has built a new product of Real 8K TV as well as YouTube 8K video playback codecs AV1 and VP9 as well as HEVC. In addition, 4 HDMI 2.1 ports that play 60 copies per second of 8K images are installed, so users can enjoy 8K images by connecting external devices such as game machines.
LG Electronics has installed Alpha 9 3rd generation, an artificial intelligence processor that has evolved into Real 8K TV. Alpha 9 3rd Generation has improved data processing speed and learning algorithms compared to Alpha 9 2nd Generation in 2019.
Based on the 'Deep Learning' algorithm technology, this artificial intelligence processor learns more than a million images and tens of millions of sound information, compares it with the original image and automatically optimizes image quality and sound.
Alpha 9 3rd Generation recognizes the faces and texts of the characters on the screen and realizes optimized picture quality. In the case of the face, the skin tone is naturally expressed and the expression is detailed. The border of the text is more clearly shown.
The artificial intelligence processor also supports 8K upscaling. Images of 2K (1920X1080) and 4K (3840X2160) resolution are upscaled to 8K level image quality to provide more clear images.
The genre of the playback video is also recognized to show the image quality optimized for content such as sports, movies, and animation. Users do not need to change the genre setting separately.
LG Electronics has also greatly enhanced its artificial intelligence sound function based on the Deep Learning algorithm. We classify the content genres that are playing such as movies, music, and news by ourselves and implement the sound quality optimized for each genre. When news videos are released, the voice is more clearly heard, and when watching movies, the sound is more powerful.
LG Electronics' 8K TV converts 2-channel sound sources into virtual 5.1 (speaker 5 and woofer 1) surround sound as if they are played on 5 speakers, and realizes stereophonic sound optimized for the space where TV is installed.
LG Electronics has further strengthened its natural language voice recognition function based on LG ThinkQ. LG ThinkQ's voice recognition function is available in 144 countries around the world and has 20 supportable languages.
LG Electronics has installed Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa, a global artificial intelligence assistant, on its proprietary platform WebOS, and linked Apple's AirPlay 2 and HomeKit services. Users can use a variety of platforms to experience more powerful artificial intelligence.
The artificial intelligence homeboard feature, which was first introduced in 2019, is also available as a voice. Even if the user is separated from the TV, it is possible to easily operate the device connected to the artificial intelligence homeboard such as LG ThinkQ home appliances by voice command.
“We will provide a different image quality and sound experience with 8K TVs with the more powerful artificial intelligence processor Alpha 9 3rd generation as well as the 'Real 8K' resolution,” said Park Hyung-se, vice president of LG Electronics’ HE business.
